Report: Pistons’ Beasley Investigated for Gambling On League Games
According to media reports today, the U.S. District Attorney's office is looking into NBA free agent Malik Beasley about gambling claims connected to NBA games.
Examination of Accusations of Gambling
There are currently no charges against Beasley, according to his attorney, who spoke to the Associated Press. Beasley is specifically under investigation for his involvement in league game and prop bet gambling during the 2023–2024 season while he was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks.
He was allegedly nearing a new three-year contract with the Detroit Pistons, with whom he played last season. Last season, the shooting guard, who had signed a one-year contract with the Pistons, averaged 16.3 points per game, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. He was hoping to earn a multi-year contract.
For the first time since 2019, Beasley assisted the Pistons in qualifying for the playoffs. ESPN's Shams Charania stated that the contract negotiations are currently on hold.
Sentencing for Jontay Porter
Less than a year has passed since Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was permanently barred from the league for breaking gambling regulations, and the Beasley probe follows suit.
"Investigations revealed Porter manipulated his performance in games, along with co-conspirators, to influence betting outcomes, including faking injuries to exit games early. Court documents revealed text messages where Porter talked about his intention to bench himself to manipulate prop bets.
In July 2024, Porter entered a guilty plea to wire fraud conspiracy, acknowledging his involvement in the plan to pay off gambling debts.
Prop Bets with NBA Games
Porter, who was given a lifetime NBA ban, is considering a potential jail sentence. A sentence of 41–51 months in prison has been proposed by federal prosecutors. His sentencing hearing was rescheduled from May of last year to December.
Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat was the subject of a federal investigation earlier this year for unusual betting patterns related to a 2023 game he participated in while playing for the Charlotte Hornets. However, Rozier has not been charged with any crimes and has not received any penalties from the NBA.
